Did you catch Shatterbox in the GDUSA American Graphic Design Awards? Our studio had three winning projects published in this years annual. According to GDUSA there were over 9,000 entries submitted for recognition- so this is quite an honor for our shop. Success can only be measured by the client and their willingness to trust the designer. Shatterbox redesigns part of America’s history.

Shatterbox is honored to officially announce the redesign of James Madison’s Montpelier. The project goes down as one of the largest websites the studio has ever produced. With well over 100 uniquely designed pages, the website offers visitors a glimpse into what is affectionately referred to as the home of the United States Constitution.

James Madison was a planter, a scholar, the Father of the Constitution, and the fourth President of the United States. Montpelier is the historic home where James and his wife Dolley Madison, (America’s “first” First Lady) lived for many years.

It was here at Montpelier where James Madison first imagined the Constitution, spending six months in his upstairs library researching governments, organizing his thoughts into what he believed were the ideal principles for a representative democracy. Madison’s ideas would become the “Virginia Plan,” and later the framework for the Constitution.

The Montpelier estate features the Mansion, garden, historic buildings, exhibits, archaeological sites, and forests trails. Spend an hour or two—or a full day with family and friends—strolling the grounds, picnicking, and learning more about the Constitution, James Madison, and Montpelier.

Shatterbox welcomes Samuel Stidham to the development team

We are happy to welcome another hire to the Shatterbox design and development team with the addition of Samuel Stidham.

Studying at Western Kentucky University to earn his Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Technology—Samuel’s passion for website development is ever-growing.

Samuel has experience using multiple server-side scripting languages, which include: Perl, PHP, and ASP.NET. Samuel is also familiar with several programming languages, and has an in-depth knowledge of current web development standards developed by the W3C, and has a driven passion for developing interactive, dynamic, and data-driven web-applications.

Yoshi Kasahara joins the Shatterbox design team

Originally from Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Japan, Yoshi earned his Interactive Design degree in May, 2011 from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. Yoshi’s work has won six ADDY design awards including local and regional recognition during the past three years. Currently working toward a Masters in Computer Science, Yoshi continues to grow his professional abilities—both technical and creative.

Kentucky Innovation Network launches a new brand look

Shatterbox has partnered with Kentucky Innovation Network to create a new brand strategy, visual identity, and website.

The Kentucky Innovation Network was established in 2001 and expanded in 2012. It is managed in partnership by the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation and a number of regional/local partner organizations. It is a statewide network of experienced business mentors focused entirely on the development of innovation-driven, technology based companies in Kentucky.

On September 1, 2012, Kentucky Innovation Network launched the new visual identity, and a new website kyinnovation.com. This new identity reflects the brand’s focus on the development of innovation-driven, technology based, companies in Kentucky.

Michael’s work has been recognized internationally and is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany. His work has appeared in publications including: Cannes Design Lions, British Design and Art Direction, The Clio Awards, I.D., Graphis, Type Directors Club, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club of New York, The One Show, The AR100 Show, Step 100, and Print.

Why designers should be in love with the process

Yves Béhar talks to us about the seven principals of the design process at Fuseproject. Specifically he discusses the idea that good design comes from diving in head first and learning where the product has been, but even more importantly where it could go. Questioning the obvious is something we can easily ignore—it’s the easy way out. But what if every project, every new business, every student, was to ask “what if…?”

A good designer should force the tough questions that sometimes the norm is not the best solution. Sometimes there’s a better way, that for whatever reason has not been explored. So what do you think happens when your business is the first to try these new ideas. You get exposure of course! Lots and lots of beautiful exposure. Yves talks about the works of Fuseproject, including the PUMA shoebox redesign. He talks about how process is so important to good design.
